About Lehigh's Trademarks and Licensing Office

Lehigh University enjoys a rich history dating back to 1865, and since has gained world-renowned recognition as an institution of higher education. This tradition has lead to the development of a loyal alumni, student and supporter base worldwide. In developing our strong tradition, Lehigh has become identifiable by several words and symbols that are known as trademarks.

What is a Trademark?

A trademark may be a word, symbol, design, or a combination of a word and design, a catchphrase, or even a unique sound, which identifies and distinguishes the goods or services of one party from those of another. Lehigh has several “protected” trademarks that have been federally registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. As such ONLY licensed vendors are legally permitted to produce products (whether internal or for resale) with our trademarks, logos, and name.

Why do we protect ours?

The tradition of Lehigh, coupled with its large alumni and supporter base, has produced a considerable demand for products that display the marks associated with Lehigh.

The Lehigh University Trademarks and Licensing Program was created in 1995 to ensure that:

  • The public properly identifies and associates University marks on products bearing the University’s logos
  • Lehigh’s name and symbols are protected
  • There is a cooperative relationship with licensees to assist in the further development of a market for officially licensed products of Lehigh University.
All University groups, departments, and individuals wishing to use or distribute products which incorporate protected University marks must purchase the goods from a licensed vendor.

As part of the requirements of a licensing program, Lehigh requires any company desiring to produce products with the protected marks to obtain a license. All artwork must be approved by Lehigh's Trademarks and Licensing office prior to producing/distributing/selling any products that utilize the University’s registered and common law trade names, trademarks, and service marks regardless of use or method of distribution.

About CLC Licensing Partners

Lehigh University has partnered with CLC to assist in the management of the Trademarks and Licensing program. CLC is responsible for the daily administrative activities generated by the program, such as processing license applications, coordinating artwork approvals, collection of royalty payments, and enforcement of trademark infractions. Please note: approving artwork is the responsibility of Lehigh's Trademark & Licensing office. Our office reviews all artwork and either requests edits, or approves the artwork.
